Exploring Santorini

Posted on 07.24.17

Exploring SantoriniThere are over 200 islands in Greece, and it can be difficult to find a starting place; Santorini is a great beginning! Discover the connection between the lost Atlantis and Santorini!

Santorini (or Thera or Thíra) is a volcanic island southeast of Greece’s mainland, and located in the southern Aegean Sea; it is a part of the Cyclades group of islands (Thíra, Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea and Nea Kaméni, to name a few!). Santorini is part of a circular archipelago, and it’s the remainder of a volcanic caldera. Santorini offers views that will leave you awe-struck! Cobalt waters against the white, red, or black sand of the beaches, lush vineyards surrounding picturesque towns, or the cliff-top towns which provide the most wondrous vistas over the Aegean Sea. Santorini is known for its spectacular views, and is touted as a great romantic getaway! Santorini supports itself with tourism, and agriculture. It is able to provide a sumptuous feast for the palate, with an aperitif of extraordinary wines, to island visitors.

The Caldera hiking trail offers a chance to explore the awe-inspiring views along the caldera’s edge. The path is over five miles and connects Fira to Oia. The trail climbs on its way to Oia, and the vistas that you encounter will leave you awestruck. The trail is not overly difficult, and the stunning views are well worth it.

Santorini is rife with activities. Choose your own adventure, and explore through snorkeling, sailing, tours, kayaking, diving, or cruises. Take a volcano cruise, or go on a wine tasting tour. Take a ferry to one of the neighboring islands. Book a sunset cruise to capture the majestic view as light casts its spell over sea and land. Visit the archaeological site of the Ancient Akrotiri, a destroyed Minoan Bronze Age settlement, and some believe it to be the missing Atlantis. Take in the sights: Agios Nikolaos Monastery; the breath-stealing Church of Holy Cross in Perissa; the church of Panagia Episkopi; the Monastery of Holy Trinity; the church of Panagia Katefiani; the Monastery of Prophet Elias; feast on the scenes offered by a visit to Skaros Rock; and take time to explore the many other wonderful offerings of seascapes, museums, restaurants, and of course the coastline.

Santorini has a plethora of artifacts to investigate, a volcano to explore, beaches to relax upon, trails to hike, hot springs to visit, and sea life to befriend! Santorini is a place to share with loved ones, especially if the loved one is you. Contact your travel agent today.
