A Journey to Cumberland

June 21, 2017 //  by Direct Supply Network - Travel the World

A Journey to CumberlandMajesty, Moonbows, Memories and Moonstones

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is majestic; its beauty is breathtaking— from the gorges to the trees, and the water to the skyline. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is enclosed completely by the Daniel Boone National Forest, near Corbin in Kentucky.  The Cumberland Falls State Resort Park occupies 1,657 acres.  The park was established in 1931 by committee. Kentucky native T. Coleman DuPont’s widow purchased the falls and the adjacent 593 acres for $400,000 in 1930 to fulfill her husband’s desire to use the land as a state park.  In 1931, after the dedication of the park, the road to Corbin was improved, and in the three months following more than 50,000 visitors came to see the “Niagara of the South.”  Within the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, you will find the home of the “Niagara of the South,” a 68 ft. waterfall, known as Cumberland Falls.

Cumberland Falls is about 3x the height of an adult giraffe, and it is home to the only moonbow in North America.  On a clear night, under a full moon, and with a bit of luck, a moonbow will appear: a gleaming arch of light, rising above the mist, only seen at Cumberland Falls, in Kentucky, or Victoria Falls, in Africa.

If you are looking to make memories, the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is a great beginning.  The Cumberland Falls State Resort Park offers a plethora of activities for the nature enthusiast: camping, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, paddling, swimming, wildlife viewing, and more!  Enjoy a game of Horseshoes, go on a picnic, schedule a guided rafting tour, play a game of shuffleboard, or chase balls on the tennis court; pursue your joy.

The Cumberland Falls Mining Company provides a new enticement: gem mining.  Available as an individual, family, or group activity, one can discover local gems like pyrite, fluorite, or quartz, and rarer finds of semiprecious stones, like amethyst, garnet, citrine, moonstone, or others!

Enjoy nature, but like a little civilization?  Cabins, and cottages are available. Searching for a little more adventure? The Cumberland Falls State Resort is located about five miles from Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort which provides whitewater rafting, a climbing wall, zip lining, as well as other activities.
